Coleman Stainless Steel French Press Review

Coleman Stainless Steel French Press
Average Reviews:

Bought this as a less expensive alternative to some of the other models. I wish I would have spent the extra money to get the nicer one. They look almost exactly the same, but they are not. The filter screen folds at the edge leaving a couple of gaps about the size of a pencil where coffee grounds can pass by the filter.

BonJour Hugo 8-Cup Unbreakable French Press, Black Review

BonJour Hugo 8-Cup Unbreakable French Press, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I owned two Bodum French presses and broke - and replaced - the glass
carafes for both of them. And then I broke them both again (always in the
sink, always trying to wash them quickly in the morning so I could just get
some caffeine into me!) So I thought I'd give this model a try because my
Bialetti is a pain first thing in the morning (but otherwise great for
impressing guests.) ;-)
Am I ever glad I got this! The BonJour is superior to my old presses in so
many ways:
First, obviously, it won't break when I wash it. I love the flat bottom -
none of that four-legged-metal-base tippiness in the sink or on the counter.
And the fat rubber ring on the bottom? It's removeable - it's just there to
insulate your pot and keep it stable on the table.
I was concerned when I read elsewhere that the filter on these models
couldn't be taken apart for cleaning. With my Bodum presses, grounds would
always get lodged between the screen and the metal frame that held it in
place - really icky if you didn't unscrew them and wash the plate, screen,
and stem each time (a major pain - probably why my dirty pot remained
unwashed until I needed it the next morning, and... well, you know where
that led.)
Well, on the BonJour, grounds never get into the screen - the plunger has a
rubber rim that keeps everything down below, where it belongs, and the edges
of the screen are sealed. A quick swish in soapy water and you're
finished... no reassambly required. (In reading the previous review, about
the plastic screen pins giving way, I'd just suggest using minimal pressure
when pushing the plunger down, and making sure the screen's rubber rim is
wet before inserting it into the pot, as the directions indicate - that'll
put less stress on those pins, I think.)
With my Bodums, the screen/plunger would remain about 1/2" above the base of
the pot when fully "plunged". Because of this, the grounds would all slosh
to the side of the spout when you were pouring, and a lot of coffee or tea
would remain in the base behind the dam of grounds. You'd have to roll the
pot from side to side to get the remaning coffee out, invariably spilling as
much as you gained. The BonJour's plunger goes all the way to the base, so
pouring is much easier - no dam of grounds to block the liquid.
The BonJour also has a fine sediment screen at the top of the pot (you can
bypass it if you'd like) which means NO floaties in your coffee or tea. And
I mean FINE - it's not like the silly, wide grate on the Bodum, which was no
help at all.
This is much lighter than the same-sized Bodum, and the handle is very wide
and comfortable to hold (it feels rubberized and won't slip in your hand).
And you can't beat the price.
If I ever DO break or otherwise damage this one (I have heard you can put
them in the microwave but I'm not taking any chances - similarly, I don't
put rolling-boiling water in, but add it just before it boils or wait for it
to cool a bit after, to avoid any melting problems), then for SURE I am
going to get another BonJour.
Of course, as with ALL French presses, when they say 8 "cups", they mean
espresso cups; this holds about 3 American mugs, or 32 oz. / 4 measuring
cups at the top of the black rim. Someday they'll get that standardized for
us!

Bodum 8-Cup Glass Beaker for Presses Review

Bodum 8-Cup Glass Beaker for Presses
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The descriptions of these replacement beakers is inconsistent and make ordering a challenge. Some confuse U.S. and European cups while others list "ounces." Total capacity in ounces should be listed as well as dimensions in inches. If a customer has broken his or her beaker that information may not be available so the Bodum product numbers should also be provided. All this information is available on the Bodum website but is hard to transpose elsewhere. As it is, if a mistake is made the customer must pay the postage for the return as well as for any followup order. In the meantime your otherwise excellent press is "beakerless" and unusable.

Bodum Shin Bistro 8 Cup Coffee Press, (No Cork) 34-Ounce Review

Bodum Shin Bistro 8 Cup Coffee Press, (No Cork) 34-Ounce
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This product is my first coffee press, and I love it! It is perfect for me since I am a college student and don't really share my coffee with my roommates. This press makes about 2-3 cups of coffee. The description does say 8 cups, but that is 8 FRENCH cups, which are MUCH MUCH smaller than the cups here in the U.S.
It makes just enough coffee to have a little in the morning and some later during the day OR enough to fully fill up my travel mug.
Since I had never used a French press before I was a little apprehensive about working the plunger, but after reading the directions, everything worked out great! I was able to make coffee in under 10 minutes (first I boiled my water in a tea kettle, and then poured it right into my press). I had thought using a press would take even longer than a conventional coffee maker that drips the coffee, but it was faster! The drip coffee makers take forever to drip the liquid, while the pressed coffee was ready in a few minutes after boiling the water.
This French press is also very easy to store and transport around. (I take it to my boyfriend's house since I don't always finish my coffee in the morning.)

Bodum Presso Doublewall Stainless Steel Thermal 8 Cup Coffee Press, 34-Ounce Review

Bodum Presso Doublewall Stainless Steel Thermal 8 Cup Coffee Press, 34-Ounce
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I seem to be trying every coffee press on Amazon, with dismal results. After breaking _another_ glass Bodum french press, we decided to go to stainless steel. The problem is that all the stainless press pots so far have high prices, combined with quality issues, as detailed in my other reviews. Now for this one:
Okay, first, it does not come with a "3-part stainless screen" as described. Actually, it comes with a one-piece screen assembly with a silicone edge gasket and stainless screen material molded into a plastic frame. If you have an old 3-part stainless screen assembly lying around (from a broken glass Bodum, perhaps...) you can screw that on, as the threads are the same size, or just use the whole assembly, lid and all.

Personally, I don't at all appreciate plastic in my food, much less in my scalding hot coffee. There is no safe amount of plasticizer for the human body to contain, and all plastics release chemicals, most especially when heated and in contact with hot liquids. BPA is just the tip of the iceberg... YMMV, FYI, IMO, etc.
Anyway, I don't appreciate the inaccurate description, let alone the cheap, plastic construction. So this one is going back.
The body of the thing is solid, for sure, and looks to be indestructible, other than the handle, which wiggles a bit... Probably sturdy enough for careful use, but not super solid. The picture makes it look nice and smooth, but my example has a bunch of ripples at the angle between the upright section and the angled bottom. Compared to the picture online, mine looks like the "before" picture with abdominal flab.

The lid assembly is pretty bad; there's a cheaply-stamped little triangle in the lid, which mars the smooth look, and is presumably intended to indicate the direction of the plastic grill underneath that permits pouring. But that plastic bit underneath is not connected to the metal top, so they can and do rotate independently, making the stamped triangle useless. The two bits are attached by a plastic clip that also serves as the bushing for the shaft, so you could maybe disassemble it and glue the parts together. The rubbery plastic top button screws directly onto a metal shaft, and looks sure to strip out and loosen.
I'd keep it if it weren't for the plastic screen and chintzy lid, but the cellulite-like rippling on the main body isn't very attractive, either. Ah, market forces and their inexorable pressure for lower quality! My search for a solid, 100% metal, well-made large coffee press continues.

French Cafe by BonJour Unbreakable 8-Cup French Press Review

French Cafe by BonJour Unbreakable 8-Cup French Press
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the best French press I've ever owned, bar none. I used Bodum for years; they were okay, but they always broke. I bought the Meyer French Cafe a couple of months ago. It's made of a non-breakable material, so should last longer than the Bodums. I've found the press also keeps my coffee much hotter while brewing than the Bodum did. The press screen does a great job, but there's also a second fine screen to cover the opening when you pour. I don't use it, because I'm afraid it will strain off the 'foamy' part; the foam is of course where most of the coffee oils are, and they are where the flavor lives! In any event, this is a wonderful coffee press, and I'm going to buy a couple more, one to keep in my weekend house, the other for when I need to make a vat of coffee for guests.

Bodum Brazil 3-Cup Glass Coffee Press, Black Review

Bodum Brazil 3-Cup Glass Coffee Press, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, make sure you notice in the writing above that while this is called a 3 cup press, it does not make 3 US cups. It makes 1.5 US cups. This is a sip or two more than will fit in most of my mugs and hence is exactly the amount of coffee I want since my husband can't stand coffee. If you were wanting this to make a mug each for two people though, you won't be happy with this little guy and need to look at the bigger models.
Other than that, this is pretty straight foward device. It's very easy to use and a snap to clean. And the coffee it produces is excellent; after using it for two years, I now have problems when company comes over and I want to use my big autodrip coffee maker because so much of the richness of my beans get lost with the drip method.
The only thing that keeps me from rating this product a full five stars is that I have problems with the filters after about eight months to a year. The press currently in my kitchen is actually the second one I have had because the last one became unusable when the filter simply stopped being willing to stay in place. Now I am having this problem with the replacement. It is possible that my problem is due to the fact that the filters get warped and could be solved by simply buying new filters, but since the filters are $4 plus shipping and a complete replacement costs $11, it makes as much sense to me simply to replace the whole unit and have a backup in case I drop it and shatter the glass (which has happened in the last year!). But, really, I shouldn't complain too much about this because $11 a year is a small price to pay to make perfect coffee.

It features an ultra-light, heat-resistant borosilicate glass beaker, which is both strong and resistant to temperature extremes and dishwasher safe. UNBREAKABLE FRENCH PRESS Review

UNBREAKABLE FRENCH PRESS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this little French Press for Christmas (cost was the full $25) and used it every day for five months, until the plastic screen holder on the bottom of the plunger pretty much disintigrated. I've used french presses for years and am in the habit of disassembling the plunger/filter mechanism for periodic cleaning. This is fine for metal screen holders, but this plastic one cracked and soon broke into small pieces.
I'm going back to Bodum. Their glass carafes can break (and be replaced), but I never really liked the plastic carafe on the BonJour Hugo -- it quickly began showing minute scratches, giving the impression that it wasn't completely clean. (I'm not a clean freak, but good coffee calls for clean brewing equipment.)
If it weren't for the broken holder and the plastic carafe, I would have given this french press five stars.

This is THE brand to use if you use a French press. You will never have any trouble with coffee grounds in your coffee. The press fits perfectly and the screen is fine enough to keep even the smallest grinds from leaking through. Only one caution, 4 cups means 4 small cups of coffee. If you use a mug, its 2 1/2 to 3.

I've had one of these press pots and have used it for about 5 years. The description says it keeps coffee warm for hours. This is not quite right. It will keep it drinkable for an hour (the press pot is not double hulled like nissan thermouses). I transfer mine directly after pressing into a nissan thermous. My press pot has been used daily and it is as good as new. I don't under stand why people buy the glass one press pots. This nissan will last forever! The mesh screen does get worn, but mine is not so bad I'd replace it.

Bodum 1923-16 Chambord 3-Cup Coffee Press Review

Bodum 1923-16 Chambord 3-Cup Coffee Press
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Even if you find an espresso machine alluring, in the meantime, you can't beat coffee made with this elegant and perfectly functional press pot. It's simply the easiest and best way to extract maximum flavor from your finest beans (use a uniform grind slightly coarser than automatic drip). Some people even prefer it to espresso. It's durable, easy to clean, and doesn't require electricity.
One reviewer claimed they put the grounds and the water in the pot, immediately pushed the plunger and waited 10 minutes. However, they will get much better results if they wait 2-4 minutes (depending upon the coarseness of the grind) before plunging the coffee, and then drink it right away. I wouldn't even let the coffee rest, plunged, in the pot for ten minutes, as it will become over-extracted.
As for the reviewer that whined about truth in advertising, all I can say is "Duh". They themselves pointed out that the pot does make three espresso cups' worth of brew. And if they watch what they are doing next time, instead of just trying to pour 12 oz. of hot water into something, they can avoid future unpleasant experiences. I actually make coffee for two "cappuccinos" with this model. If you don't like your coffee as strong, you can simply add a little hot water to your cup after you have poured your coffee (like an Americano).

When Bodum took over a small clarinet factory in Normandy in 1982, it was not because of the fine orchestra clarinets they were producing but because of a relatively unknown coffee maker called the Chambord which they produced as well. The reason the French press coffee maker has become one of the most popular coffeemakers in the world is pure and simple, taste. The materials (glass and stainless steel) are completely taste-free so nothing comes between your ground coffee beans. This is exactly the reason why coffee tasters use this method to determine the quality of coffee beans. No paper filter not only means no waste, but that the coffee bean's essential oils go directly to your cup, delivering the flavor that is lost on paper filters. Simplicity works best and is the reason why the Chambord's design has not changed a bit from its original drawing. Make taste, not waste! 0.6L, 17 oz capacity.

Bodum 1548-01US Brazil 8-Cup (34-Ounce) Coffee Press Review

Bodum 1548-01US Brazil 8-Cup (34-Ounce) Coffee Press
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let's face it, dumping coffee grounds into a bucket of hot water is nothing new. The Bodum Press is a refinement of the cowboy coffee brewing method, minus the campfire & straining it thru a sock. In My world, there is no such thing as "too Strong" for coffee. There IS, however, too bitter & too acidy. The press does what perking, dripping and steaming ground coffee cannot do: produce a stout, yet smooth cup of coffee - just like the stuff made around decades of my campfires.
Model Brazil, made in Denmark by a Swiss Company & called a French Press. No wonder the confusion over exactly how many cups this actually makes. The Euro-instructions for the press say 4 oz. per cup, but even my fine Bavarian China cups (from when I lived in Munich) are 6 ounces.
Just look at it this way: It holds 32 ounces of water.
The instructions on your roast coffee container usually say to use 1 TBSP per 6 ounces of water (NOT 4 ounces & NOT 8 ounces). Again, in MY world, 32 ozs. makes about 2 cups of coffee.
I toss in 6 or more scoops of ground coffee, pour in hot water & wait the obligatory 4 minutes. The result is a smooth coffee that you can drink by the quart without that nasty heartburn/reflux side effect.
It's ideal for work, where the office sissies are afraid of offending anyone with REAL coffee, so they make it weak. I simply step up to the hot water spigot & take the Press to my desk.
Now, you, too, can have coffee the way you like it at work without having to cover up someone's botched brew with that foo-foo Vanilla, Hazelnut, Irish Cream or other phoney-flavored faux creamers.
Cleanup? Swirl around some soapy water, & dump the grounds down the sink - just be sure to have the water blasting & the garbage disposal running, so as to not plug up the sink trap.
Even if you already have the coffee-brewing apparatus of your dreams, buy the Bodum 32 oz. model. You won't be disappointed.
