Instead it consisted of zinc sulphide between conductive plates that glowed when electricity was applied.
The glow at around 60 hertz (standard house current) was bluish- green, but Popular Electronics magazine featured a project that could vary the frequency and hence the color between blue and green.
Some decades later this discovery found a new use: in Indiglo watches, as Timex called their luminescent feature.
