(More customer reviews)Sylvania introduced the Panelescent night light in the '60s. It was the perfect night light but it had one marketing flaw: it never burned out. That's because it had no bulb. Instead it consisted of zinc sulphide between conductive plates that glowed when electricity was applied.
The glow at around 60 hertz (standard house current) was bluish- green, but Popular Electronics magazine featured a project that could vary the frequency and hence the color between blue and green.
Some decades later this discovery found a new use: in Indiglo watches, as Timex called their luminescent feature.
