I don't have a roommate so the top bunk isn't occupied, however the bars are perfect to zip-tie all sorts of handy items to (I personally hang a mesh zippered bag for my tv/other remotes cuz I lose them often). The "C" design is is pretty cool looking. Only down-side I can find is after a year of continuous use, I had to flip over the futon lower frame cuz I had my girlfriend AND me on it at the same time quite often, and the total weight had slowly bowed the rungs. But that's no biggie to fix, I did it in 15 minutes. The transition from bed to couch is quite smooth, even with an 8" mattress. Entire thing can be assembled in like 45 minutes to an hour.
