(More customer reviews)I purchased the LaCrosse WS-9520U last week. As usual, the transaction and shipping with Amazon was excellent. I very rarely return online purchases, but this one is going back. In general, the unit is as advertised - and others may find it completely satisfactory - but, after two nights of use, I have found the following specific things to be unacceptable:
1. The backlight cannot be set to remain on continuously - it only lights when a button is pushed - regardless of whether you're powering with AC or batteries. I think alarm clocks are always more convenient when you can see them at, well, uh, night. Yes, the on-ceiling projection shows the time, but nothing else. This is less than convenient.
2. General build quality is iffy at best - the buttons are clunky, loud and awkwardly placed. The entire unit seems flimsy - like it's just barely holding itself together. It's extremely light and does not have a very steady base, which will make it prone to being knocked over (like when reaching for the snooze button - which you can't see because it's not illuminated and there's no backlight) and I'm not sure this thing would survive being knocked over. Sorry to say, but for $70, this just seems very cheaply built from the mechanical side of things.
3. I guess this is obvious in hindsight, but the actual time display is tiny, maybe an inch tall. Granted, you have the projector, which works as advertised (only when it's dark in the room - projection is photo-sensitively switched on/off - no other option), but seeing the clock from across the room during daylight (when the projector is not on) is not really possible unless you've got astronaut eyes.
4. There are no alarm options and the only existing tone is - IMHO - obnoxious and too loud - a sort of high-pitched staccato double-chirp. I realize this is a personal issue, but a few buzzer options would have been nice.
5. There is absolutely no way that the battery cover on the outdoor sensor will keep the elements out of the sensor. Maybe this isn't an issue if you have a protected outdoor place to locate the sensor - but if there's any moisture at all, this thing won't last one winter here in Michigan.
In summary:
Electronics: Acceptable and as advertised, tho the few things I mentioned could be better
Mechanical: unacceptably cheap, shoddy assembly fit & finish for this price point.

The radio-controlled clock regularly resets to match the US Atomic Clock and adapts for daylight savings time. Place the freestanding base at least six feet from intended projection surface. To enable constant projection, the weather station comes with a 120-volt AC adapter. The separate purchase of five AA batteries is required. Covered by a limited one-year warranty, the weather station monitor measures 6-2/3 inches wide by 2-9/10 inches deep by 4-1/2 inches high, and the sensor measures 1-3/4 inches wide by 1 inch deep by 6-1/4 inches high.

(More customer reviews)After my Oregon Scientific atomic clock/barometer station started falling apart, I began looking for a similar item that would be large enough to see from across the room without my reading glasses. This Honeywell Weather Clock fills the bill nicely. This will hang on a wall or sit on a desk, runs on easily available AA batteries, and gives the atomic clock time/day/date, inside and outside temps (comes with a wireless outside thermometer remote probe), and a nice weather animation. There's an alarm, too, but I haven't tried it out. No backlighting, so it's more of a daytime wall clock-plus. It's aluminum-look plastic, but sturdier than my old Oregon Scientific clock and hung up more easily. It's definitely worth the money, and it's not expensive at that.

After comparing different brands that people I know had I settled on a Oregon Scientific BAR388HGA and am very satisfied with it. I bought this sensor mainly to monitor the temperature in a second floor room. The sensor is approximately 60 feet away, up one floor and through several wall from the main unit, and it work very well.

Compatible with over 50 Oregon Scientific products, this thermo-hygro sensor transmits temperature and humidity readings back to a main display unit, available separately. Most main units come with a single sensor; incorporating an additional sensor like this model makes it possible to monitor conditions in another point of interest. Honeywell TM005X Wireless Indoor/Outdoor Thermo-Hygrometer Review

(More customer reviews)I was most interested in the humidity measurement. I conducted a calibration****(See update at end of review) with a sling psychrometer. A sling psychrometer measures wet bulb/dry bulb temperature and is the least expensive (albeit a bit tedious to use) and most accurate way to determine relative humidity (RH).
I needed to know relative humidity for curiosity indoors and for a chamber in my basement used to dry cure sausage (I needed a 70%RH environment). The Honeywell unit was spot on with the sling psychrometer (and temp. was accurate as well).
The unit is new; I need to check it over time for accuracy. However, it's running very well so far and the price is right. I'll be buying more remote sensors [...] I found the remote sensor part no. is TS33C, can find them on Amazon with that search).
The majority of complaints say the humidity is "off." However, I didn't see a single valid calibration conducted.
Update 01-March-2009
I just took the main unit, the sensor and sling psychrometer. The conditions in my home at time of testing were 68F and 30% relative humidity.
Main unit read 68.4F/30% RH
The Sensor: 68.0F/30% RH
Sling Psychrometer: 68F/31% RH
The sling psychrometer consists of two sealed thermometers and will never need a calibration, it is an accurate standard. This Honeywell Unit is pretty darn good.
Update 13-Dec-2009
Someone contacted me and corrected a big point. I did not calibrate the unit by adjusting it to a known standard, I simply compared the values. My apologies for this rather serious error.

to set up - but you absolutely must follow the directions exactly.
Range is excellent - but just make sure that some large object such
as a metal shed or a large oak tree is not in line-of-sight between
any of the transmitters and the receiver.
I am using 3 of these temp sensors with the 915 MHz receiver. One
sensor came with the receiver, and I just purchased two more, since the
receiver can display up to three different temperatures from three
sensors. However be advised that if you carry one or more of these
sensors out of range and the receiver loses track of it, you absolutely
must take the batteries out of all three sensors and out of the
receiver and re-initialize all of them. This is not a difficult step,
since I did it several times while playing around with the sensors to
see how much range they had - which resulted in the receiver losing
track of one of them.
When you first see the instruction booklet that comes with the receiver,
it looks daunting, but not to worry, since only a tiny part of it is in
English, with all the rest in other languages. Once all the temp sensors are
initialized, then it takes only a few seconds to set the clock.
I read in other reviews that some buyers had problems getting their
receiver to respond to some sensors, but that is because the buyers failed
to properly re-initialize their units. Also be advised that if you buy
a display unit that receives transmissions at 915 MHz, then you absolutely
must buy sensors that also transmit at 915 MHz. Several of the sensors
that are sold by Amazon look alike, but not all of them use 915 MHz, so
carefully read the tech specs to make sure that both the transmitter and
the receiver operate at 915 MHz.
