Philips 10.4-Inch Digital Photo Frame (Brown Wood Frame) Review

Philips 10.4-Inch Digital Photo Frame (Brown Wood Frame)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I find it ironic that Philips tagline is "sense and simplicity" because it makes absolutely no sense to produce a photo frame that doesn't have the ability to display photos in random order in a slideshow. What's even more mind boggling, is that if you view the photos in calendar mode, the photos appear in random order.
If you can put aside that one major problem, the frame is actually good. Pictures and colors are crisp and I love the fact that the frame is matted with a glass top. Makes it look just like a real print photo.
I'm not sure if I'd pay full price for this though. I only bought it on a whim from Costco because they were on sale a few weeks back. My guess is that the other two reviewers did the same. I'll be returning it next week.

Buyer Beware! My Smartparts display didn't work out of the box. I called their tech support and they were very rude. They had me ship it back for replacement. But I never received a replacement! Now they wont reply to emails or voicemail. They must be out of business or at least not interested in helping customers. It was a total rip-off. If yours works when you get it, good for you. If not, you will lose your money like I did.

the software provided is suppossed to be compatible with Windows XP, but after loading it I got the following message "no photo Viewer is found, program termined". (the word terminated is actually mispelled in the message box). I uninstalled and reinstalled the program several times. Did a Google search and apparently this is a common complaint. Went to the Nextar website which was no help at all. What a waste of time and money. Don't buy this product.

Panimage PI8004W01 8-Inch Digital Picture Frame (Black) Review

Panimage PI8004W01 8-Inch Digital Picture Frame (Black)
Average Reviews:

This review is for the Pandigital PanImage 8" Digital Picture Frame Model Number PI8004W01. Purchased 1/19/2010.
First, I should share that I am very technically oriented and a perfectionist. I won't put up with a poor quality or pporly engineered product. Second, I just cannot for the life of me understand some of the comments in the negative reviews for this product based on my experience. I am not sure whether Pandigital has upgraded the product but maintained the same part number or what but there are some clear differences between those posts and my experience. The product I received does have a full 1GB memory and does display photos in a clear and crisp full 800 x 600 resolution. I was almost impressed with the playback of a video. In fact, out of curiosity the first thing I transferred was a 150mb video file that played perfectly sound and all.
Features I really like:
+ The ability to schedule the frame to turn on and off at predesignated times as I am giving this as a gift to my wife who will be putting it on her desk at the office.
+ The ability to select "auto convert" which converts the images being imported to the ideal image size for display (saves storage and saves time from having to do it myself manually on a PC).
+ 8" display as the 7" just seemed a little small to me.
+ 4:3 aspect ratio. I was actually planning to go with something that had 16:9 but then realized most cameras still use/produce 4:3 so this will display most images perfectly vs. having black bands on the right and left (like watching non-HDTV picture on an HDTV.
+ Connectivity - Supports most memory card sizes, USB cable connection to a PC, direct access to a USB drive, and more.
+ Sound - the ability to play a video and hear the sound or even background music if desired.
Last but not least, I was considering a Sony as an alternative but found that many user reviews are complaining about the inablity to load and play a photo that was edited by PC software. I retouch and/or edit photos using photoshop and other tools so I decided to avoid the Sony product.

Sony DPF-VR100 10.2-Inch WSVGA LCD (16:10) Digital Photo Frame (Black) Review

Sony DPF-VR100 10.2-Inch WSVGA LCD (16:10) Digital Photo Frame (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ordered the Sony DPF-VR100 after doing some research and reading some reviews. Pretty new, so not a ton of reviews. I guess I took a leap of faith since it had everything I was looking for in a digital frame - widescreen format, large internal memory, fairly high resolution, video playback, power on/off options, and more.
When it arrived, I immediately powered it up. I'm not a manual kind of guy - I like jumping in and seeing how easy things are. This frame was both easy to get up and running, as well as needing some further work/reading/playing with. First off, plugging the frame directly to my laptop resulted in nothing happening - no pop-up on what options I wanted for this device, no format request, nothing. So I took my 32gb SDHC card and moved photos from my laptop onto the card, and plugged the card into the frame. Bingo! The frame recognized the card, the photos and I was off and running. So a few trials with the menu and the 'import images' option was found easily enough. I started the import of 557 images onto the internal memory, and it took roughly 20 minutes? All the photos were fullsized, untouched images from my camera. Anyways, After they were transferred I started the slideshow (super easy with the remote!) and enjoyed the pics for a bit. Then, on a whim, I plugged it back into my laptop and this time I got the popup asking what I wanted to do with the external drive. Not sure why, but after I moved the photos the frame became available as an external drive when connected via USB. In looking at the files on the frame, every one was now in the 256kb size range instead of 1-4mb, so the frame resized them according to the longest side. I hadn't noticed any major changes in the photos, so the resizing was done pretty well. I do plan on resizing the photos by hand, so that I can get a true 1024x600 size to fill the frame completely - not all of them are end to end, there are some black bars to fill space. But that's due to the 4:3 nature of some of my photos.
Next came video... one of the biggest reasons I got this frame was for video playback. I have a number of video files that would be cool to display on this, from a few different sources. I wanted to try using a flash drive for this, so I grabbed 3 different flash drives... 2gb, 8gb and 32gb to see how they work. The first, the 2gb, did not show up. As soon as I plugged it in I got an error message saying it was unrecognized. So I tried the 8gb - same thing. Then the 32gb... same thing. Crap... I found an older 256mb drive in my drawer, and lo and behold, it worked. But size could not be a factor these days... could it? So I did a little looking - and found ONE difference. The older drive was FAT32, and all my other newer ones are NTFS formatted! I reformatted the 8gb into FAT32 and BINGO! Worked fine. So if anyone finds a USB flash drive will not work with this, check the formatting... FAT32 is needed it would seem. Once I found that, it recognized the drive and displayed the images on the drive... or rather the video! WOOHOO! But when I tried to import the video onto the internal memory, I was not able to - something about unable to import.I guess it tries to resize them too? But connecting the frame directly to my laptop via USB was easy, and I was able to move the files into a new folder on the drive. It was SLOW tho... really slow. I usually get 30MB/second in USB transfers but this was in the realm of 1.5MB/second.
But... when I tried to PLAY the first video, a .MOV shot with a Kodak Easyshare camera, it was an unrecognized format. Then I tried an AVI, same message. Uh oh. Then I tried a .MP4 shot from my GoPro Hero HD - and it played beautifully. So I tried running the videos thru Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10 Suite, converting them to MP4 and voila! They all play fine now. Kind of a pain to need that step, but I may investigate further and see what does/does not play. With all the codecs and options in videos, I'm not surprised some won't play (see all the options within Vegas Studio when rendering... can be very confusing!)
Finally I added some new music to the frame for background during slideshows... I imported them just fine, but it took a little bit to find out that I had to go in and manually add them to the playlist. The photos you add are automaticall thrown into the slideshow, so I expected the music to be as well. But, it is just a few steps in the menu to do so, once you realize it. The music is pretty good for what it is... a photo frame. It won't win any audio awards with the quality, but it does the job well enough. I ended up turning off all the music on the frame as it got to be a bit much.
Other options in the menu are pretty nice - there is an easy setup for the auto on/off, or a more advanced if you want multiple on/offs daily. Plus clocks, photo shuffle, photo display times (3, 7, 20 seconds, 1, 5, 30 minutes, 1, 3, 12 or 24 hours), and multiple ways to have the slide show... one at a time, tiled, artsy, and others. Even a single photo display like a 'normal' photo frame. And the remote is super handy - don't even bother with the buttons on the back of the frame. Another nice feature is an auto-rotate depending on the frame orientation - landscape or portrait.
So all in all, I'm really happy and impressed with the frame. The display quality is very good (to me), the sound is pretty good (altho disabled now), and there are lots of options for display. It looks nice, and one of the buying points for me was that there is no matte between the image and the physical frame. It has a nice rod that screws in the back to make it into a desktop frame, as well as all the mountings for a wall - I'm using it on a desktop as I don't want the power cord hanging down the wall. The quality of the construction seems to be well done, but we'll see after the dogs invariably knock it over on the desk a few times.
If you're looking for a 10" digital frame, with the option to do video... in my opinion this is a frame that would be hard to beat (as long as you don't mind tweaking the video some)

Sony Dash Personal Internet Viewer Review

Sony Dash Personal Internet Viewer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
UPDATED: Sony has released a software update that rolled out in the first week of June 2010. I've edited the review below to identify issues resolved in the software update. I have noticed some freeze-ups since the software update, but they've been relatively infrequent. If you buy the device new now, it will update itself as soon as it connects to the internet. The Sony Dash is marketed as a "personal internet viewer." In my opinion, it does not live up to that name. Others are more accurately calling it "glimpse internet" and "upgraded alarm clock." It's a 7-inch touch tablet designed with a weighted wedge style, meant to sit on a countertop or bedside table. Sony basically licensed or bought the Chumby OS and added its own internet video service as well as re-designing the UI a bit for the larger screen. I was attracted to this device because I liked the idea of a Chumby, but it seemed overly bulky and too small of a screen. The Dash takes all the good parts about a Chumby and adds a bigger screen and a better design.
I'm giving a lot more detail below, but to sum up: what you think of this device is largely going to depend on what you want from it. To me, this device's best tagline would have identified it as a "wake-up station"...telling you everything you need or want to know as you wake up to begin your day. My rating of this device is based on what I expected out of it: in short, a glorified alarm clock. If your alarm clock could:
* tell you weather and traffic at a glance
* have multiple alarms per day, each with their own sounds, configurable in any way you want...if you want to wake up at a different time each day, with a different tone each day, it can handle that. (Really, if you've ever used your cellphone as your alarm clock, consider everything your cellphone can do as an alarm clock...this can do all the same stuff, without ever having to worry about all the problems of cellphones as alarm clocks.)
* quickly show you a few e-mails, status updates, or photos
* let you go to sleep/snooze to a podcast or internet video
If you look at that list and think, "wow, that's exactly what I want in an alarm clock," then you're the target user for the Sony Dash. Sadly, they're not marketing it to you at all. Really, they're barely doing anything to sell this device. I've seen exactly zero ads. Were it not for Engadget, I wouldn't have even known it was available or what it was. And, stupidly, what Sony is doing is positioning this so it goes up against things like the iPad and Archos tablet. Sony should be positioning this as the best damn alarm clock in the world. That's their mistake and what will, IMO, make this device fail.
On that note, I've seen alot of reviewers poo-poo the Sony Dash by saying "oh, my cellphone could do this" or "oh, my iPad does this better". Well, your cellphone and iPad don't do what this does, because neither of those devices are meant to sit still on a bedside table. Your cellphone and likely your iPad get up and leave when you do, which makes them nearly useless as an alarm clock unless you are a single person living alone. Even if you are a single person (or if you are willing to have separate devices for each person), you'd need to buy several accessories to make a cellphone or iPad sit as nicely as this does on a surface. So, long story short, a cellphone and an iPad appeal to a broader audience, no doubt, but, this device hits a very necessary niche for which the iPad and cellphone are ill-designed.
PROS:
* Very fast and easy setup on the device -- you can use the device without going to the web, but there are quite a few apps that require configuration via the web, and the web config has issues (see Cons list)
* Design is sleek. It looks damn cool on your bedside table.
* Pleasing UI, simple to navigate
* AccuWeather weather (a plus over other weather services, IMO)
* Sits securely (can be rubbed by cat without falling over)
* Bright and colorful screen, videos look great
* Completely customizable alarms and alarm clock
* NEW IN 6/2010 UPDATE: Customizable snooze length - 1,2,3,4,5,10,15,20,25, or 30 minutes
* "night mode" that dims the screen and shows only the clock, when the next alarm is set for and the weather in black and white...though I did notice today that it's got a little "mom" that writes itself in in cursive, which is kind of a cool "surprise" bit of chrome
* Price is just about right, in my opinion. If Sony ripped out everything but the alarm clock and weather functions, shrank the screen, and got it to $99 or $79, that'd be a very nice product...would beat the heck out of the American Innovative Neverlate Executive Alarm Clock. At $199, it's less than a netbook, less than many cellphones, and far less than the Apple products that could fit this space.
* Usable touch keyboard, fine for posting to Twitter or Facebook, but I wouldn't use it to type a long e-mail
* Really good selection of default sounds loaded
* Was able to access my Amazon Video on Demand purchased videos and play them easily, and since I haven't bought anything else that does that yet (except my PCs, of course), that's a nice feature for me.
CONS:
Now for the bad news. There are three issues that, in my opinion, are near blocking issues, but the silver lining to the cloud is that all three are likely to be resolved by Sony soon, and my rating reflects my strong belief that these will be resolved soon. Still, were I Sony, I'd feel great shame to have shipped this device with these issues as they are:
* USB drives are not working yet. This is huge, because they promise this on the box, and it's the only way to access your own music from the box (no DLNA or other wireless transfer support). It says "coming soon" if you attempt to play music or view pictures from a USB drive. Were I not in love with this as my alarm clock, I'd return it based on this alone. - RESOLVED IN JUNE 2010 UPDATE - USB drives are now accessible! You still cannot set an MP3 as a wake-up alarm, however.
* The web setup is a mess. The site itself looks shoddy, like no one actually cared enough to make it look nice...and the configuration area is not easily accessible from Sony's main site. You have to go to Sony's "MyEssentials" site (a term/brand that is in no way associated with the Dash), and that site is not linked from the Sony Dash page on Sony's site, nor from Sony's main site. Logging in from Sony's main site and clicking on "my devices" takes forever to load, so I never found out if I could get to the Dash config site from there. To find the config site after the initial setup, I ended up going to [...], trying my Sony login, and then Chumby re-directed me to the MyEssentials site. Basically, the setup on the Dash itself is so simple, but as soon as you hit the point that you need to use the web to configure something, you're lost. For this reason alone, I can't recommend this for non-geeks...which sucks because if this were fixed, I could see this being a really nice gift for a number of non-geeks in my family. I mean, this is basic stuff that they blew off, and it speaks volumes to Sony's lack of commitment to this device. - IMPROVEMENT IN JUNE 2010 UPDATE - It is no longer necessary to use the MyEssentials site to configure the Dash. You can do most day-to-day aspects of configuration from the device itself, though the device will still prompt you to register on MyEssentials during initial setup. This is particularly good because it turns out that Sony STILL has not improved the MyEssentials site for the Dash, and they can't reset passwords for your registered account through the website. You have to call customer service. If you try to reset your account's password through the MyEssentials site, it sends you to the SonyStyle site, which uses a different database of usernames and thus will not work.
* No web browser...which I wouldn't care about if there were more apps or if this weren't being sold as a "personal internet viewer"...but to call yourself an internet viewer and not have a browser is just sad. Plus, this makes the apps themselves frustrating. Most of them are just ported iPhone apps, which means they assume you can click links to view more.
There are also quite a few minor issues which Sony/Chumby could resolve in the next few months via software updates:
* Not enough "apps" (really, they're widgets)...lots of popular news and info sites are not represented, and the apps themselves are not the greatest quality.
* The layout options are limited. There's only two layouts, and neither of them are satisfying. For example, there's no layout that has two app panes. You can't customize shortcuts in any of the layouts, either, so you can't (for example) make sure that the Amazon Video shortcut is the first (or only) one available. - IMPROVED IN JUNE 2010 UPDATE - 2 new layouts are available, and they definitely improved on the usability.
* Not easy to switch between "channels" (different views with different apps...for example, I have a productivity channel that has my Gmail and Gcal in it and a separate social networking channel that has all of my social networks and news feeds), takes 4 steps to switch plus a not-insignificant load time. Basically makes the channel feature useless because it's too annoying to switch channels. You're better off just loading all the apps you want into your default channel.
* No copy/paste functionality...a pain if you're wanting to post a status to multiple sites...Read more›
