For people new to screen printing, be sure to get the opaque ink for dark fabrics. While attempting to make a shirt I learned the hard way that you have to use opaque ink on a black t-shirt. Once I did this, my shirts were awesome!!! This brand and color was great and I definitely recommend.

The Screen Printing Hobby Kit, by Ryonet Corporation is a great instructional product for the right price.
The DVD lessons on how screen printing works make this item a worthwhile investment. Having used and almost considered the Yudu, I decided to try this product after seeing their instructional approach.
You will need a few more things to get started. However, these are not hard to get. The product overall does what it promises very well. I was able to make great one color prints and the most time consuming task was the drying [Curing the water based ink].
The delivery was fast, the components were easy to assemble, and the instruction was exceptional.
Additional things you will need:
A rig to position the exposure light 18" from the frame [I made mine, but can purchase theirs]
A 16" x 18" transparent glass [The Home Depot has affordable pieces]
A Yellow light-bulb [The Home Depot has an affordable green bug light that worked for me]
A hot air gun [The Home Depot had few, buy yours here at Amazon]
A water hose [The first time I used my bathtub it worked great but you should use a hose for more control]
A printer [Nothing fancy but do print as dark as it is possible]
Shirts, [Other appropriate surfaces]
I recommend this product as a valuable instructional tool for the beginner screen printing enthusiast.
Happy learning.

Hack the Yudu Screen Liquid Emulsion Kit (Replaces 50 Yudu Emulsion Sheets) Review

Hack the Yudu Screen Liquid Emulsion Kit (Replaces 50 Yudu Emulsion Sheets)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got my Yudu here on Amazon. But the cost of the emulsion sheets were way to expensive for me. I admit I never used the sheets included in the Yudu kit (still have them). Instead I purchased this kit from DIY (at their website not through Amazon).
I learned how to coat the screen and it was very easy to do. I am not a screen printer or "crafty," (I am working on my masters in Software Engineering). Yet, I found the screen coating really fun. Some days after studying, I'll coat my Yudu screens before I go off to bed. The next day I have screens ready to use.
This holiday I made three color shirts as gifts. So this kit really helped when I screwed up one of the screens. The liquid emulsion allows me to prep a screen really fast and wash out a mistake. It is better than the sheets in that the cost per screen is more like 50 cents. As I now own 7 Yudu screens, I can coat a screen in under a minute. I do not have to worry about air-bubbles and such.
There is a Yudu forum, and you will find that most people who are using the Yudu are using liquid emulsion.
It did take a screen or two before I got the hang of it. But with the cost per screen so low, it was OK. Anyone can afford to a few screw-ups. The DVD hos lots of good info. The scoop coater is professional and the remover will last over 50 screens.
Lastly, I world recommend the Matsui water based inks for Yudu'ers. They work great with this emulsion and the Yudu.

If you're tired of spending $10 to make a Yudu screen, this is for you.If you're tired of spending $10 to screw up a Yudu screen, this is really for you!Coating your screen with liquid emulsion is EASY and costs less than $1 per screen.

Once you've coated your screen with liquid emulsion, you just treat it the same way you would if you used the Yudu emulsion sheets.

--Burn the screen for the same amount of time.

--Dry the screen in the Yudu screen rack, if you like.

--The emulsion uses the very same emulsion remover too, and the kit includes enough concentrate to mix a whole gallon of emulsion remover. (If you bought the Yudu emulsion remover for $7.99 [3oz bottles], that's a savings of over $300 alone!)

The diyTeeShirts Hack the Yudu Screen Kit includes:

--1 qt. of Saatichem Graphic HU dual-cure emulsion (coats 50 screens, and is good for use with waterbased and paltisol inks.)--1 scoop coater sized just right for applying the emulsion to the screen.--diyTeeShirts Hack the Yudu Screen Video Tutorial: How to Coat Screens with Liquid Emulsion.--diyTeeShirts Hack the Yudu Screen PDF: notes and quick reference for coating your YUdu screen with liquid emulsion.--1 5oz bottle of concentrated emulsion remover (enough to mix a whole gallon)

Speedball Ultimate Screen Printing Kit Review

Speedball Ultimate Screen Printing Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Dear artsavedmylife-
We are very sorry that you had a bad experience with your Speedball Screen Printing Kit. While screen printing does require some trial and error, we strive to make the kits complete, fun, and easy to use. Unfortunately, we have not found a way to make them foolproof. Your comments regarding the instructions are well-taken and we have tried to make them easier. To that end, we now include a free instructional DVD in the kit. If you contact me directly, I would be happy to send you the DVD as well as some additional supplies to see if they perform better for you. We include our toll free number in every kit and have people available to help anyone who is having difficulty with our products.

The Ultimate kit does indeed come with 2 different size screens as described on the package. One 8x10 screen and one 10x14 screen provides flexibility and the opportunity to work with 2 screens simultaneously if the printmaker desires. We make many other sizes, but these are two of the most popular. There are also two 9 inch squeegees (referred to as 'scrapers'). One is designed to lay down a heavier layer of ink for printing on fabric, while the other is designed for printing on paper and similar less porous materials. The 9 inch squeegee is the optimal size to print across the width of the 8x10 screen and lengthwise in the 10x14 screen. With this combination you can print either size on both fabric and paper.
You don't need to coat the screen in the dark when using Speedball photo emulsion. We coat screens every day in our lab, at home, in schools, and at printmaking studios around the country in broad daylight with no difficulty. Just be sure to let it dry in a dark place like a cabinet or closet. Once dry, you have a couple minutes in the light before you begin the exposure so there is no need for a darkroom.
It is a real mistake to disparage the "other screen methods" as arts and crafts or child's projects. One need only see the screen prints of Henri Matisse or Jacob Lawrence to learn what an artist can create out of simplicity.
Speedball was the pioneer of water-based screen printing nearly 40 years ago. At a time when other available screen printing materials were harsh, solvent based chemicals, Speedball invested heavily in the research and development of safe, easy to use screen printing materials to complement their water-based relief printing inks. Although we have worked with thousands of students, art educators, and professional artists; we clearly have room to improve and appreciate your feedback.

Yudu Personal Screen Printer Review

Yudu Personal Screen Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After spending most of my three years of grad school in the screenprinting facilities, I was anxious to create some sort of setup for myself at home once I'd graduated. As a couple of other reviews point out, the YuDu is indeed different from traditional screenprinting - the tools are different but the process is essentially the same with the major difference being the application of the photo-sensitive emulsion. And this is where the YuDu will make or break you. While in the end I'd give the YuDu a rating between 3 and 4 stars, mostly for potential, these have been the challenging areas for me along the steep learning curve:
EMULSION:
Applying the emulsion in sheet form (rather than as a liquid with what's called a scoop-coater, as you would in traditional screenprinting) has been the most challenging part of the learning curve for me (and most others, it seems). But like any tool, it takes time and back-up supplies to learn it so do yourself a favor and have at least 2 sheets of emulsion on hand, a lot of patience, and a first project that is not on a tight deadline. The trick is having the screen wet enough but not too wet (since you're essentially doing something in solid form that's ideally applied as a liquid) and this will take practice.
BUY A 220 MESH SCREEN:
Once you get the hang of emulsion application, you may want to add a 220 mesh screen to your supply inventory since the 110 mesh screen that comes with the machine won't be fine enough to handle most text-based projects or designs with lots of detail. I got the YuDu primarily for client-based work, primarily text-based, and my own art projects, which are more graphic design based with some text. I'm not terribly interested in printing t-shirts, which is what the YuDu is primarily marketed for, so having at least one 220 mesh screen is essential.
GET YOURSELF A REAL SQUEEGEE:
I'm not fond of the tone taken in a few reviews here, most of which are hardly reviews of the product (I doubt those reviewers even have a YuDu) but rather snobby declarations of their preference for "traditional" screenprinting. I will be a snob on one point though and that's the "squeegee" that comes with the machine. Maybe this piece of plastic works well printing on t-shirts but I found it to be really inconsistent with pulling the ink through and getting a consistently printed surface on the paper below. You can find a variety of screenprinting squeegees at your local art store (or try [...] - I got the "graphics" squeegee but a standard squeegee should work just fine and there are squeegees especially made for textile printing). This is one of several details the folks at Provo Craft need to work on to make a good machine with potential really great.
INKS:
Once I finally mastered the art of applying emulsion to the screen and successfully burned my design, I found the YuDu brand inks to be too thick to pass through the finer mesh of my 220 screen. Like my squeegee rant above, this may not be an issue with the 110 screens and printing on textiles, but I found it to be a real problem, only passing through the larger parts of my design despite being able to tell that my image had burned perfectly and the emulsion had rinsed out no problem. So I experimented with a different brand of ink (Versatex which I got at my local Blick art supply store) and sure enough my design printed just fine (having a new squeegee at this point also helped). I had my heart set on a particular YuDu color, however, so I tried adding some extender (again, available with the screenprinting inks or online) and, although this did dilute the color ever so slightly, worked like a charm. I mixed enough ink (about 3-4 parts YuDu ink to 1 part extender but it may vary for you) for my entire print run and stored it in a little plastic container you can get at just about any art or craft supply store (or even a tupperware devoted to your Yudu would work).
If you want to read more, you can check out my even longer, more rambling blog post on the topic: [...]
I hope Provo Craft is reading all of these reviews, and the countless blog posts and video tutorials and taking all of these complaints into consideration. The machine itself is great - it's nice to have something that will fit on my table that's an exposure unit, light table, and printing apparatus all in one. But the accessories could use some work - emulsion sheets are tricky and costly and the squeegee is worthless. I can understand why they don't want to include all these little bits of information in the instructional DVD and pamphlet (they'd turn off a lot of potential customers if they advertised just how tricky this thing is) but a little more information up front would be useful. On the other hand, keep in mind that screenprinting is an art form that some folks spend years perfecting. Like any tool, it's going to take some time and practice to get it right, but I think this thing has a lot of potential, especially for folks like me who don't have the time or resources to create a screenprinting setup from scratch in my nonexistent garage.
Good luck and happy printing!

Yudu 110 Mesh Screen Review

Yudu 110 Mesh Screen
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The whole Yudu system is great, though a bit expensive. Amazone offers the best price I have found on most of the Yudu products- including the screens. These screens seem well made and give a great result.
I can see needing more than one screen if you are using multi-colored designs. I originally thought I could "save designs" on different screens, but I found that the emulsion bubbled after 20 or so screen printings (especially if I changed colors and had to wash the screen). So I found that just a couple of screens (but more emulsion sheets) served my pupose well.

Create multi-color silkscreen designs using this extra 110 mesh screens with a Yudu Personal Screen Printer from Provo Craft. By adding another mesh screen to the one that comes with the Yudu, the crafter has freedom to combine colors, or to save a design for reuse. The screen features a sturdy steel frame around its spacious 11-by-14-inch print area, great for large-scale designs. With its fine mesh weave, the screen enables the user to exercise more control over ink deposits on projects. The screen cleans easily, especially with the separate purchase of Yudu emulsion remover, and can be reused with reapplication of emulsion sheets. The mesh screen measures 19-2/5 inches long by 14-2/5 inches wide with a 1-inch height and weighs 3 pounds upon shipping.
