(More customer reviews)As the title says, I have mixed feelings on this unit; it turned out satisfactory for me but it may not be for everyone.
PRO: The completed piece does look quite nice and is of reasonably solid, heavy MDF and pressboard construction with a very attractive and realistic rosewood/cherry man-made veneer finish. Once the piece is together it could be mistaken for a unit costing several times as much. I ordered the unit sent to a relative out of town and traveled there to assemble the unit. The unit arrived well packed and heavy as hell. It is absolutely astounding to me that Amazon can send a 113 pound package, even flat packed as this is, as Next Day Fed-Ex for $3.99, via Amazon Prime. Seriously, I ordered on a Wednesday afternoon and it was delivered Thursday, less than 24 hours after I placed the order. Go Amazon!
CON: The assembly was what most people would consider fairly labor intensive and difficult. Several hours of hammering pegs, gluing and screwing and all performed with little instruction besides small pictorial diagrams. There is almost no written instruction provided regarding the assembly. I read the prior reviews and bought this piece specifically because I wanted a little project to work on and was not worried about any reasonable level of assembly required. However, it is my opinion that many people would not be able to put this unit together themselves and would end up having to obtain assistance from someone with more experience and, or, manual skill. That said, my main complaint is that one of the pieces of my kit was produced with the holes drilled in the wrong place so it could not possibly be made to line up with corresponding parts; there is only one way the piece in question can go in as three of its four edges are unfinished and its position is clear in both the instructions and overall design. I was ultimately forced to remove some already glued pegs with a pair of pliers and drill new holes to allow for completion of the project.
Assembly Tips: I found the box, as delivered, easier to move if I stood it up on end and bear hugged it to carry - I did not have a second person available to help, which I agree would be prudent for most. I used Gorilla Glue brand wood glue rather than the seemingly cheap white glue provided. Ensure all dowels are sunk to slightly more than half their length before gluing. I had several that were properly half sunken encounter receiving holes that were not drilled quite deep enough at the factory; this would yield a significant cosmetic problem on a finished area. A soft heavy rubber mallet and cordless drill/driver are not called for in the directions but should be considered mandatory for assembly of this unit.
